Globally, an increasing number of people live in cities. Accordingly, the urban settlements have to meet their needs. Health and wellbeing of urban dwellers have been recognized as one of the main driving forces of sustainable urban development. Nature and natural elements have been proven to contribute positively in this regard. Thus, urban ecosystems with their biotic and abiotic factors can provide an important ecosystem service related to health. Against the background of polluted water, soil, and air, highly sealed surfaces, and densely built-up areas in cities, urban ecosystem restoration is a challenge and urgent need. Options of urban ecosystem restoration will be outlined, paying particular attention on the impact of vegetation on human health and wellbeing in cities.
